The best baitcaster under $100 is the KastKing Spartacus II. It's the reel I've caught most of my fish on, from largemouth bass to redfish, and it was about $41 on Amazon on November 1. If you're brand new to baitcasters, the KastKing Royale Legend II comes in a slower 5.4:1 gear ratio that's more forgiving. On the tightest budget, the Piscifun Torrent is about $30. If you can stretch to about $65, the Lew's Classic Pro SLP is the step up. And one to skip: the SEASIR Zero119 BFS, which I bought and regret.

One to avoid: SEASIR Zero119 BFS
It was $53.99 on Amazon on November 1, more than my Spartacus II, with only a few dozen ratings. For the money, any reel on this list is a better buy. We don't link to it.
Which gear ratio should you get?
Gear ratio is how many times the spool turns for each turn of the handle. Around 7:1 is the all-rounder: fast enough for worms, jigs and topwater, and still fine for most other lures. That's what the Spartacus II comes in.
A slower ratio like 5.4:1 gives you more cranking power and is easier to control with crankbaits and spinnerbaits, which is why we suggest the Royale Legend II in 5.4:1 for a first baitcaster. A faster 8:1 reel picks up line quickly for flipping and pitching. KastKing sells an 8:1 version of this reel as the Spartacus II Plus.
Tips for your first baitcaster
Every baitcaster backlashes (the spool overruns and makes a bird's nest) while you're learning. Start with the magnetic brake turned up and the tension knob set so your lure falls slowly when you press the thumb bar, then back them off as your thumb learns to slow the spool at the end of a cast.
Spool it with braid or heavier mono, around 12 to 15 lb, rather than light fluorocarbon, which tangles more easily on a baitcaster. And make sure you buy the right hand: most baitcasters are sold as right-hand or left-hand retrieve, as separate listings.

#1Best overall (my pick)KastKing Spartacus II (7.2:1)
9.1Best for: Almost everyone: one reel for bass, redfish and everything between
Check price on AmazonThis is the reel in the photo, and it's the one I fish most. The listing calls it fine for freshwater or saltwater; I've used mine on redfish, and if you fish salt, rinse it with fresh water afterward.
On November 1 it was $40.78 for the black right-hand model on a limited-time deal (list price $47.99). It also comes in green and in left-hand versions, all 7.2:1. It ranked #2 in Fishing Reels on Amazon. It's sold through the KastKing store on Amazon and shipped by Amazon.
Gear ratio 7.2:1 (28 in per turn) Weight 6.0 oz Max drag 17.6 lb Bearings 7+1 Brake 5-button magnetic Braid capacity 30 lb / 140 yd Amazon price (Nov 1) $40.78 (left hand: B0894NYC3D) What we like
- Sturdy, with a great-feeling handle and a sensitive tension knob (in my experience)
- About $41 when we checked, with 4.4 stars from over 1,400 ratings
- Light at 6.0 oz, with 17.6 lb of max drag
- I've used mine on redfish as well as bass
Watch out for
- Only one gear ratio (7.2:1); the 8:1 is a separate reel (Spartacus II Plus)
- Some reviewers report backlash and durability problems
Verdict: My number one reel. Buy it while it's around $40.

#2Best for beginners
KastKing Royale Legend II
8.6Best for: A first baitcaster, in the slower 5.4:1 ratio
Check price on AmazonThis is KastKing's most-reviewed baitcaster on Amazon, and the reason it's here is the 5.4:1 option. A slower reel is easier to control while you learn, and it's great for crankbaits.
I haven't fished this one. It's here because of its long track record and because it's the cheapest way to get a slower ratio from the same brand as my Spartacus.
Gear ratios 5.4:1 or 7.2:1 Weight 7.2 oz Max drag 17.64 lb Amazon price (Nov 1) $39.09 (Prime price) Rating 4.5 stars (5,583) What we like
- Comes in 5.4:1 as well as 7.2:1
- About $39 when we checked, with 4.5 stars from over 5,500 ratings
- 17.6 lb max drag
Watch out for
- Not something I've used myself
- Heavier than the Spartacus II at 7.2 oz
- The low price was marked as a Prime price
Verdict: The easiest first baitcaster on this list. Pick the 5.4:1.

#3Best under $30
Piscifun Torrent (7.1:1)
8.2Best for: Trying a baitcaster without spending much
Check price on AmazonIf you just want to see whether baitcasting is for you, the Torrent is the cheapest well-reviewed option from an established brand. The $29.99 price was for the 7.1:1 right-hand model; other versions cost more.
It's sold by WILDPULSE (the listing links to the Piscifun store) and shipped by Amazon. I haven't used this reel myself.
Gear ratios 5.3:1 or 7.1:1 Weight 8 oz Max drag 18 lb Amazon price (Nov 1) $29.99 (7.1:1 right hand) Rating 4.4 stars (3,831) What we like
- About $30 when we checked
- 18 lb carbon drag
- 4.4 stars from over 3,800 ratings, Amazon's Choice
Watch out for
- Not something I've used myself
- Heaviest pick at 8 oz
- Other ratios and hands cost $37 to $45
Verdict: The cheapest decent way in. Upgrade to the Spartacus if you get hooked.

#4Best step-up
Lew's Classic Pro SLP (7.5:1)
8.5Best for: Anglers who want a name-brand reel and can spend about $65
Check price on AmazonIf you'd rather pay more for a big-name bass brand, this is the Lew's to look at under $100. It has a 7.5:1 ratio and 15 lb of drag.
It was $64.99 on November 1, sold by Outdoor Sports Specialties and shipped by Amazon. We couldn't confirm that seller is an authorized Lew's dealer, so check the seller before you buy. I haven't fished this one.
Gear ratio 7.5:1 Max drag 15 lb Amazon price (Nov 1) $64.99 Rating 4.8 stars (286) What we like
- 4.8 stars, the highest rating on this list
- Lew's is one of the best-known bass reel brands
- Amazon's Choice
Watch out for
- Not something I've used myself
- About $65, and fewer ratings (under 300)
- Sold by a third-party seller, not Lew's or Amazon
Verdict: A solid step up if brand name matters to you, but check the seller.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best baitcaster under $100?
The KastKing Spartacus II. It's light at 6 ounces, has 17.6 pounds of drag, and was about $41 on Amazon in November 2026. It's the reel I've caught most of my fish on, from bass to redfish.
What is the best baitcaster for a beginner?
The KastKing Royale Legend II in the 5.4:1 gear ratio. A slower reel is easier to control while you learn. Start with the brake turned up and back it off as your thumb gets better.
Is the KastKing Spartacus II good for saltwater?
KastKing's listing says it can be used in fresh or saltwater, and I've caught redfish on mine. Rinse it with fresh water after every saltwater trip.
Is the SEASIR Zero119 BFS worth it?
No. Mine arrived with line wrapped inside the handle, the plastic felt brittle when I took it apart, and the drag felt inconsistent. At about $54, the Spartacus II is cheaper and better.
How we picked
The KastKing Spartacus II is the reel I fish most, and my notes and photo are my own. So is the SEASIR Zero119 warning: I bought it and wouldn't again. The other picks come from research, not my own use. We kept baitcasters under $100 from established brands, rated 4.4 stars or higher with hundreds or thousands of ratings, and sold through the brand's store or shipped by Amazon. We left out imported, used and third-party-only listings. Prices and ratings were checked on Amazon on November 1, 2026, and change often.
