For most people, the HyperX Cloud III is the best gaming headset you can buy right now: comfortable, clear, wired so it works on PC, PS5 and Xbox, and under $60 on Amazon. On a tight budget, the Turtle Beach Recon 70 does the job for about $40. If you want wireless and play on Xbox, check the exact model before you buy, because several popular wireless headsets don't work with Xbox at all. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X is the wireless pick under $150 that does.

What I use: Astro A40
My take: "Very high quality. I've been a fan of Astro for a while now. I like the detachable mic, it's more convenient than I expected. While they don't block out much sound, it's a more natural-sounding reduction. I've worn these for looong periods of time with no issue." (Justin K)
I use mine on PC, plugged straight in without the MixAmp. The A40 is an open-back headset, which is why it lets outside sound in and sounds more natural than closed headsets. Unfortunately, every new A40 listing on Amazon was unavailable when we checked on October 31, so it isn't one of the picks below. If you find one in stock at a fair price, it's a great long-session headset.
Wired or wireless? And the Xbox catch
Wired headsets with a 3.5mm plug work on almost everything: PC, PS5, Xbox controllers, and Switch. They're cheaper, never need charging, and have no wireless delay.
Wireless headsets are about convenience, but Xbox uses its own wireless system. Many wireless headsets sold for PC and PlayStation, including the HyperX Cloud III Wireless, the Logitech G325, and the standard Razer BlackShark V3 X, don't list Xbox support. Look for an Xbox version (often marked with an X in the name) if you play on Xbox.

It was $57.99 on Amazon on October 31, well under its $99.99 list price. At that price it's hard to beat.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best budget gaming headset?
The Turtle Beach Recon 70, at about $40 on Amazon. It's light, has a flip-to-mute mic, and plugs into PC, PS5 and Xbox controllers. If you can spend about $60, the HyperX Cloud III sounds noticeably better.
What gaming headset works on PC, PS5 and Xbox?
Any wired headset with a 3.5mm plug, like the HyperX Cloud III or Turtle Beach Recon 70. For wireless, the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X and Nova 7X support all three.
Why doesn't my wireless headset work on Xbox?
Xbox uses its own wireless system, so many wireless headsets made for PC and PlayStation don't support it. Look for an Xbox version, usually marked with an X, like the Arctis Nova 5X or the Xbox edition of the Razer BlackShark V3 X.
Is the Astro A40 good?
Justin uses his A40 on PC without the MixAmp and calls it very high quality, comfortable for long sessions, with a handy detachable mic. It's open-back, so it doesn't block much outside sound. New A40s were unavailable on Amazon when we checked on October 31.
How we picked
Justin uses an Astro A40 on PC, and his notes on it are his own; it isn't a pick because it was out of stock on Amazon. The picks below come from research, not our own testing: we chose well-reviewed headsets from established gaming brands, sold by Amazon, and checked which platforms each listing actually supports. Prices, ratings, and specs were checked on Amazon on October 31, 2026, and headset prices change often around Black Friday.
